NOT GIVING UP

Corinthians manager Tite has said that he has not given up on the possibility of qualifying for the Copa Libertadores next season. Corinthians recently managed to win the Club World Cup, which is regarded as the ultimate prize for clubs. However, they have deteriorated quite quickly and are now struggling to even qualify for the Copa Libertadores next season. This has started widespread speculation that Tite could be replaced by the club at the end of the season. Corinthians have also confirmed unofficially that Tite will not be their coach in 2014.

They have been heavily linked with a move for former Brazilian national team manager Mano Menezes, who was recently sacked by the Brazil FA in favour of Luiz Felipe Scolari. Only the top four teams are capable of qualifying for the Copa Libertadores. Corinthians are currently six points off the team occupying the final fourth place. They have matches against the likes of Vasco da Gama, Flamengo, and Internacional in the forthcoming weeks.

“Anything can happen in the last few weeks. There are four matches remaining and I believe in the possibility of qualifying for the Copa Libertadores,” Tite said. The contract of Tite comes to an end in December. He has been at the club for the last few years during which time he helped the club win five trophies, which is one of the best records. It has been reported that the club has reached a verbal agreement with former Brazilian manager Mano Menezes, who was in charge of the national team from 2008 to 2010.

It is expected that he will take charge of the team immediately after the exit of Tite. The Copa Libertadores title and the Club World Cup title will remain as the best achievements of Tite as the manager of Brazilian giants Corinthians.

SEASON ON HOLD

Corinthians started the league as one of the favourites to win the league title, but the season has gone extremely poorly for the club, who won the European equivalent of the Champions league only recently. They recently suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Botofogo. As a result, they are 13 points behind leaders Cruzeiro in the table. Despite this, striker José Paolo Guerrero is confident that the team can win the title. This seems to be a very bold claim to make given the points that the club has to make up from now till the end of the season.

Corinthians have been on a very poor run of form in recent weeks. This has been demonstrated by the run of just one victory in the last five matches. One of the major problems for the team has been scoring goals. In the 20 matches this season, they have managed to score only 19 goals. Paolo Guerrero has been very poor in front of goal this season. In these matches, he has managed to score only four goals. Despite this, he is of the opinion that Corinthians can put up a late title challenge. The club currently hold the FIFA Club World Cup title after managing to beat Chelsea in the competition at the start of this year.

“We are still in with a fighting chance. Nobody doubts that Corinthians are still one of the best teams in Brazil. I am confident that the team will recover. The great thing about Brazilian football is that anything can happen. We are going to fight until the last moment and believe we can still be champions,” said the striker ahead of the weekend’s match with Goiás. Since this match will be at home, three points will be the minimum fans will be expecting in order to get the job done.

SHEIK SIGNS

Brazilian club Corinthians have moved swiftly to secure the future of Emerson Sheik after there were several reports that clubs like Flamengo and Vasco were interested in signing him. The striker has been one of the important players for the club in the last few years. These goals have helped them win the league title, Copa Libertadores title, and the Club World Cup trophy which they claimed by defeating Chelsea in the final. The 34-year-old maybe at the end of his career, but Corinthians believes that he will be able to carry on playing at the top level at least for the next few years.

The club’s director Roberto de Andrade has said that they have made an offer for the player and it will be known in the next few days whether he accepts it or not. He is hoping that Emerson does not take long to extend this with the club. He is expected to sign the two year contract on the table. The club, who have been rich in cash as a result of winning several major trophies the last few years, have also announced that they have agreed a deal to bring Ponte Preta defender Cléber. The transfer fee is estimated to be in the region of € 2 million.

The player has signed a four-year contract with the Brazilian club. The 22-year-old was expected to join a little while ago, but negotiations took a little longer than expected. It has been made complicated due to the presence of the party ownership in the player’s contract. However, every issue has been reportedly solved and the player will now play for the Brazilian club.

“I have talked with Emerson, I am confident he will accept our proposal and remain with us. I am almost sure he will stay at Corinthians,” said de Andrade.
