CORINTHIANS EXIT COPA LIBERTADORES IN QUARTERS

Corinthians have crashed out of the Copa Libertadores at the hands of Brazilian rivalsFlamengoat the quarter-final stage. Corinthians came into the second leg quarterfinal clash with hostsFlamengoneeding a comeback after losing the first leg. In the end, they were beaten 1-0 byFlamengothereby exiting the competition via a 3-0 aggregate victory.

In the first leg on Wednesday, August 3, Corinthians had home advantage but they could not make it count after losing 2-0 to their Brazilian opponents. A goal in each half was enough to putFlamengoin a strong position ahead of the second leg. Uruguayan international midfielder Giorgian de Arrascaeta scored the opener with eight first half minutes left to play to give his team a slender lead at the end of the first 45 minutes. Gabriel sealed the win with the second Corinthians goal six minutes into the second half.

 

Goals from de Arrascaeta and Gabriel ensured thatFlamengowent into the second leg of their Copa Libertadores quarterfinal clash with Corinthians at home in a strong position as they had one foot in the semi-finals. After a goalless affair in the first half of the second leg on Wednesday night, Pedro gavehostsFlamengothe lead seven minutes into the second half and it turned out to be the only goal of the game at the expense of a Corinthians side who finished the game with ten men. The visitors had to play the final quarter of the game with ten men after Bruno Mendez was sent off.

 

Corinthians will turn their attention to the league this weekend after they were dumped out of the Copa Libertadores by Flamengo earlier in the week. They have a big game at home to leaders Palmeiras in the league. They are in second spot and can close the gap on Palmeiras to three points with a win.
